A beautiful nature trail for hobby cyclists (Iron Curtain Trail)
Route : Iron Curtain Trail (Northern Lower Austria)
For whom : Hobby cyclists and lovers of nature, peace and history.
One of the most beautiful and most comfortable cycling routes in Austria. As the name suggests, the historic long-distance route Iron Curtain Trail follows the borders of the Iron Curtain (over 10,000 km in total) and its Austrian part runs along the Czech border.
Look forward to the breathtaking Waldviertel landscape along the Thaya River and quiet country roads where you and your group can relax. This cycle tour is also suitable for "non-athletic" cyclists, as it is not that demanding. If you are considering a day trip, we recommend the section around Hardegg and the Thayatal National Park.
You can start anywhere, but a good starting point is in Retz or near Vranov nad Dyjí.
What not to forget to pack

Quiet asphalt roads, dirt roads, almost no cars... and most importantly, plenty of opportunities for a picnic, sitting in a café or tasting delicious wine await you. The Austrian town of Retz (about 1 hour by car from Znojmo) is an ideal starting point.

Well-marked trails through meadows and forest paths with magnificent mountain views , as well as classic asphalt roads await you. The imaginary highlight is the climb to the Plöckstein peak, from where you can see into the Czech Republic and Austria.
And where to start? For example, in Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald (about 1 hour by car from Lipno).
