How smartwatches work and how to protect them from breaking

We recently provided a detailed analysis in an article on how to choose a smartwatch in 2026. But do you know how this clever electronic device works and what you can do to protect it from everyday hazards? We at FIXED took a close look, so read on carefully.

Whether you're a new smartwatch owner or just considering buying one, our tips will help you extend the life of your watch and avoid unpleasant surprises.

How smartwatches work, or it's all about Bluetooth

For any smartwatch to perform its functions, it needs two basic things: connection to a phone and its own sensors. These are the foundation of smartwatch operation.

Connecting a smartwatch to a phone

In the vast majority of cases, connection to a mobile phone occurs via Bluetooth, due to low battery consumption and a stable connection over short distances. The principle is similar to using wireless headphones.

Once you connect the watch, you can manage it through the manufacturer's app, where you can set everything according to your needs and preferences.

Some smartwatches have built-in LTE or eSIM, so you can make calls and use mobile data even when you don't have your phone with you.

How sensors work

The second main pillar of smartwatch functionality is sensors, which monitor everything from physical activity to sleep. Smartwatches most commonly use the following:

  • Heart Rate: An optical sensor monitors blood flow in the wrist; accuracy is affected by strap tightness, movement, and temperature.

  • Sleep: Evaluation is based on movement and heart activity. However, this is only an indicative overview.

  • GPS: Satellite positioning records the route and pace; accuracy is reduced by buildings, forests, or terrain.

  • SpO₂: Optical blood oxygen estimation requires proper placement and close contact with the wrist.

How to turn on and set up a smartwatch

First and foremost, we recommend primarily following the instructions in the manufacturer's manual; this way, you'll be 100% sure you're proceeding correctly. For a basic understanding, we provide a general guide below that applies to most smartwatch models.

How to turn on a smartwatch and give it power

  1. Unpack the watch from its original packaging and use the charger to charge it to at least 30–50% capacity. Only then proceed with the setup.

  2. Then turn on the watch, most commonly by long-pressing the side button.

TIP: The first watch update may take longer as it involves installing necessary system components. This also causes the battery to drain a bit faster.

How to pair a smartwatch with a mobile phone (iOS and Android)

The procedure varies slightly across brands and operating systems, but generally, for both iOS and Android watches, it is as follows:

  1. Download the manufacturer's app for your smartwatch (from the App Store or Google Play).

  2. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone.

  3. Open the downloaded app and click on Add/Pair Device.

  4. On the watch, confirm pairing.

What if pairing doesn't work on the first try? Don't give up. Try restarting both the watch and the phone, or canceling old Bluetooth pairings (in Bluetooth settings). Also, check if the smartwatch is connected to another phone.

If that doesn't help either, you can reset the watch to factory settings.

How to achieve maximum battery life for smartwatches?

Just like with phones, some models have incredibly long battery life, while others are worse off. Whichever option you choose, here are tips on what to do to keep your watch running as long as possible on a single charge:

  • Turn off or limit the always-on display, i.e., the mode where the watch constantly shows time and information on the screen. This saves battery.

  • Keep notifications only from the most important applications, e.g., banking apps.

  • Reduce the frequency of some measurements (e.g., SpO₂), if you don't need to monitor them at the moment.

  • Set GPS to turn on only during sports.

  • Adjust brightness and backlight duration according to where and how you use the watch. At home, lower brightness and short backlighting are sufficient; outdoors or mostly the opposite.

How to protect your smartwatch and shine among others

If everything went according to plan, your watch is now on, and you can start using it. However, one more step is needed: take care of your device's protection and style. Don't worry, we'll help you with that too!

Protection is crucial, as it only takes a few weeks for scratches, scuffs, and other signs of daily use to appear on your smartwatch.

At FIXED, we build on Czech design and practical accessories for smartwatches and other electronics that are functional, high-quality, and visually clean.
