How a Car Charger Works

It's not rocket science. A car charger plugs into a 12V socket (car lighter), from which it then draws power from the car battery. Inside the charger is built-in electronics that convert the input voltage (typically 12V or 24V) to a lower, stable voltage suitable for the USB output (most often 5V).

Should I choose a car charger with USB-C or USB-A?

Choose the output type on your car charger based on which devices you want to charge in the car.

USB-Cwith Power Delivery support will charge your phone quickly. It makes sense especially for newer phone models that already have a USB-C connector.

Car chargers for iPhone and Samsung

All FIXED car chargers are compatible with iPhones, Samsung, and other brandsof phones. However, compatibility does not depend on the device manufacturer, but on the type of cable and connector the phone uses (e.g., USB-C or Lightning).

USB-C car chargers are useful for all newer devices with a USB-C connector, such as the iPhone 15 and newer, or most current Android phones.

Sets with a Lightning cablewill be appreciated by owners of older iPhones (roughly from iPhone 5 to iPhone 14).

Answers to frequently asked questions about car chargers

Does a car charger work in a van or truck?

Yes, most modern car chargers also work in vans and trucks. They just need to support both 12V and 24V power, which is a common standard today.

Can I charge a laptop with a car charger?

Yes, but you'll need a more powerful USB-C charger with Power Delivery (usually 45–65 W and more). The laptop must also support charging via USB-C.

What is the difference between Power Delivery (PD) and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0?

Power Delivery is a more modern standard that uses USB-C and has higher power and better charging control. Quick Charge (QC 3.0) is an older technology from Qualcomm, which mainly works via USB-A and is more intended for older Android devices.
